The Insight: CEI’s 2018 Motto

In the past couple of years, CEI has started the year off with an annual kick-off meeting. Every year there has been a theme or motto that the company has carried throughout the year. 2018’s meeting is still in the works and is scheduled for April 15th but the theme is picked.

This years theme is Everything Counts!

It is broad and is most literally about everything but it is important and a great theme to kick of the year. 2016 and 2017 we some of CEI’s best years and looking forward, they are striving for even better. When it comes down to it, growing a business can be all about the details. It is important to pay attention to everything to achieve excellence.

The theme is inspired and loosely based on a book called Everything Counts! by Gary Ryan Blaire. Blaire has worked to help clients reach their goals and be more successful in many areas. His book provides a golden rule to excellence.

His rule is-

“Everything Counts! Everything you say; every thought you entertain; and everything you do has direction, which serves as an advance or a retreat in respect to your pursuit of excellence. Everything, regardless of size or intent, has bottom-line consequences; therefore, everything counts!”

The book goes into many small detailed aspects to define “everything”, the managers and partners at CEI have narrowed it down to there best 4 aspects to discuss with their teams; Quality Counts, Every Customer Counts, Every Detail Counts and Failure Counts.

Project Spotlight: Walbridge New Hudson Yard

Starting in August of 2017, the Walbridge yard job is located in New Hudson, Michigan. The job consisted of installing metal deck with flute fill insulation. CEI’s crews had to remove curbs on a high roof and patch holes in the deck. This job was short and successful ending in October of the same year. The best highlight of this job was it was free of safety violations and injuries. The simple job only consisted of one layer of insulation.

CEI foreman-Don said, “Everybody worked together, instead of against each other (on the job site).”

Teamwork and safety make for some of the best jobs.

Project Spotlight: Texas Assembly Plant

CEI received a job in Arlington Texas less than a year ago, the job was for a roof on the new construction of an expansion to this assembly plant. The new $1.4 million expansion includes a paint shop and upgrades to the assembly plant overall. CEI started on the job in April of 2017 and finished up in September of the same year. The project consisted of a flat roof with a vapor barrier and 2 layers of I.S.O, metal wall panels, and flashed walls and pipes.

“I would say that my best job of 2017 was our Texas job, it was a nice, clean, wide-open job”- Ron Bailey, Foreman’

March 2nd- Call for Spring Inspections

Project Spotlight: Biological Science Building

The Biological Science Building (BSB) located in Ann Arbor is one of the most unique roofing and sheet metal projects in CEI’s history. Started in 2016, the project has taken well over a year and is still being actively worked on. The 300,000 gross square foot building, will be used for a variety of student resources including research laboratories, classrooms, vivarium services, and the four museums. It also has connections to the current Life Sciences Building.

The project included new construction of a hot rubber roof, fully tapered and fully adhered with reinforced rubber. The second half was a sheet metal dome. As seen in the pictures the dome was created with galvanized 90 degreed marine grade plywood and 22gage bronzed stainless steel.

“I was ecstatic to have received the opportunity to apply myself in such a manner and thankful. Also relieved that I was able to accomplish the task of roofing an igloo in the middle of winter.” -Bill Ryan, Sheet Metal Foreman

Spring Inspections!

February is when the year starts to pick up the pace. Here at CEI, everyone is preparing for the upcoming roofing season. Bids are starting to go out, service is starting to prep for maintenance and just around the corner is spring!

We all know what that means…

Project Spotlight: Ford Fairlane Town Center

The Fairlane Town Center is a located in Dearborn, MI. The former mall has been converted to office spaces for Ford Motor Company while they begin work on their 10-year project for two large campus headquarters. The Fairlane building was in need of small renovations of canopies over multiple entrances. CEI bid the Fairlane project in 2017 and have been working hard at it since.

A smaller project in size, it involves work only on a few entrance canopies. Each canopy involves interior and exterior composite wall panels with a small section of TPO roof on the top. The project is a big one for CEI because it is the first project that CEI is crafting there own composite panels. Over the course of 2017, CEI has been piecing together a composite panel shop. This adds a huge new division to CEI existing sheet metal shop. Ford Fairlane is the putting this new shop to work and the results are fantastic.

Project Spotlight: Detroit Observatory

One of the oldest buildings in Ann Arbor, the Detroit Observatory was built in 1852.

At that time it was outside of campus and city limits of Ann Arbor. As the city has grown it has encompassed the Observatory. It is one of the oldest observatories of its kind. CEI has been put to the test of restoring this amazing piece of architecture. The dome that is the highlight of the building is quite
the statement piece on its own. Adding to that statement is a new zinc-coated copper roof covering the dome. The dome has put CEI to the test and given them an excellent project to showcase there craftsmanship, attention to detail and skills when it comes to working with historical restorations.

Make Your Roof Last Through The Winter Season

As we find ourselves in the dead of Winter, the photos below are an all too familiar scene. Snowy conditions are leaving facility owners and managers with extraordinary circumstances to deal with. The roofs across Michigan are no exception. The winter brings wind, ice and snow that together can create huge drifts on the roofs of buildings. Adding to all of this, below freezing temperatures are taking their toll. Besides the snow loads, splits, cracks and frozen drain pipes are the main culprits contributing to roof leaks.

CEI’s Service Department Winter Note

To our service and repair customers,
We have not forgotten!
Service calls and work orders that were generated prior to the inclimate weather have not been forgotten. The ability to perform the work based on current conditions is reviewed daily.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we schedule through the winter!
Our goal is to serve in a timely, efficient manner- regardless of the elements. As service is requested, however, it is essential that we know if the leak is
1) contained
2) an emergency or a nuisance?
3) creating hazardous conditions for your workers or tenants.
If conditions do not allow for permanent repairs, temporary measures can be taken to stop the leaks, or in emergency situations, re-direct them. We will work with you to help solve your problems. Upon completion of our visit, we will leave the site in a condition that is acceptable to all parties involved.
